During the winter of 1942-43, due to gas rationing, permission was give to say Mass in the Recreation Hall in the Green Pond Hotel.
Reverend Andrew Romanak, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Rockaway, established at Green Pond. In the summer, Mass was celebrated in the Community House. After the Saturday night dances in the Community House the parishioners would clean up and set up for the 9:00 am Sunday morning mass.
On July 8, 1946 the parish was incorporated, receiving its name St. Simon and Fr. John McKenna was appointed administrator. That same year the church was built, which we still use today. The rectory was a bungalow on the hill behind the church.
In 1954 Fr. Fleck became pastor followed by Fr. Carl Wolsin who became pastor in 1961. During the Wolsin years the church was redecorated and remodeled for Vatican II liturgies.
In 1966 St. Simon became a mission of St. Thomas in Oak Ridge which had just become a parish. At that time our mission church was led by Fr. Phalon as the pastor.
St. Simon became a parish in 1971 and the rectory was opened with Fr. Mullan as pastor. Then in 1975 the new rectory was built with a parish social hall.
Fr. Elso Introni repainted the inside of the church in the mid 1980’s. In 1987 Fr. Robert Morris was named pastor followed by Msgr. Conway in 1990 as the next pastor.
In 1993 Fr. Joe Anginoli became pastor. He would have the hall under the rectory outfitted as a social space with a kitchen and air conditioning. The front doors of the church were replaced and the handicapped ramp installed. The church hall was converted into classrooms for religious education space in 2004 -2006’s due to a generous gift from the estate of the Harry & Lovey Funk . This was started by Msgr. Anginoli and finished in 2006 by Fr. Marc Mancini who became pastor in 2004.
Fr. Marc was responsible for the initial Marian shrine which was later enlarged. Fr. Marc was responsible for taking down some of the walls on the front of the church. Hurricane Sandy destroyed the classroom space and was rebuilt by Fr. Marc and Fr. Dan Staniskis who became pastor in 2011.
In 2012 Fr. Richard Bay was named pastor. The parish celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2021. On June 30, 2023 Fr. Richard Bay retired.
